Open call for visiting scholars : Labex MS2T fellowships

The Laboratory of Excellence (LabEx) MS2T at Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC), France, invites applications from visiting scholars who would like to spend a minimum of one month of their sabbatical at UTC.

The MS2T fellowships aim at promoting UTC collaborations with outstanding scholars. Transdisciplinary research proposals related to the field of “Technological Systems of Systems” are welcomed. In addition to academic excellence, a key factor in the selection process is the potential for a mutually beneficial research visit, both for the visiting scholar and for the research community of the LabEx ; Visiting fellows are expected to work on themes closely related to the LabEx’s research agenda and are encouraged to take part in one of the LabEx challenge teams.

The typical visiting period ranges from one to three months full-time at UTC, though longer visits may be arranged. The available positions are assigned through a competitive selection procedure. Preferential treatment is given to candidates who have never held a visiting position at UTC in the past.

Qualifications

Applicants at different stages of their academic career, from junior researchers to established scholars, are welcome to apply. They typically hold faculty appointments at other institutions. They must hold a PhD degree or equivalent, with strong record of research publications.

Financial support

A financial support is provided for a stay of up to three months in Compiègne, to cover living expenses (i.e. food and accommodation). Besides, the fellows will be provided with office space, IT facilities and secretarial support, as well as use of the UTC’s in-house library.

The open call lasts until the end of 2018.

Application Procedure

The applicant should send the following material preferably as a single PDF file, to Laurie.Herlin@utc.fr :

  • A short letter of introduction that (1) states the purpose of the research stay, specifying the proposed duration and starting date of the visit, (2) describes how the fellowship would profit your research, and (3) how you would contribute to the research agenda of the LabEx ; maximum of one page.
  • A research plan of no more than 2000 words with :
      - The background and objectives of the research you are working on at the time of the proposed visit,
      - The work plan for the proposed visit that specifies which part of the research you intend to carry out, within which challenge team, and with which LabEx faculties. This should also include information on the specific type of work you are planning to do (for example, analysing data, developing algorithms, working on an article or a book manuscript)
      - A bibliography.
  • A CV with a list of relevant publications ; maximum of three pages.

About Labex MS2T

The national initiative "Laboratories of Excellence" (LabEx) aims to select internationally renowned laboratories of excellence and to provide them with the means that enable them to keep pace with their foreign counterparts and to attract top level foreign researchers. It should help them build a high-level integrated higher education, training and technology transfer policy. The MS2T LabEx fosters research dedicated to the control of technological Systems of Systems, in transport and mobility, security, and e-Health. MS2T is a transdisciplinary research project, with three broad research topics :

1. Interaction and cooperation among systems

  • Management of information flows in networks
  • Distributed information processing
  • The autonomy of interacting systems

2. Management of uncertainties

  • Modeling of uncertainties
  • Robustness in the face of uncertainties and integrity
  • Uncertainty in digital modeling

3. Optimized design of SoS

  • Multi-level and multi-physical optimisation
  • Scheduling and synchronisation of mobile sub-systems
  • Operational safety of technological SoSs

Labex Challenge Teams : Starting from 2015, the scientific activities aim to focus on a limited number of meso-level challenges, in which realistic systems of systems are to be studied, and concepts/methods drawing from several disciplines to be put together to approach the complexity of TSoS.
